Cyclone the storm is forecast to strengthen into a rare category five cyclone as it shifts in the direction of the Caribbean island, bringing life-threatening rapid inundation and mudslides.

The hurricane, which registered winds of up to 120 miles per hour as of 0600 Greenwich Mean Time, is now shifting toward the northwest in the Caribbean and is projected to make landfall by Tuesday, based on data from meteorological authorities.

Warnings of blackouts and damage to infrastructure have been announced as the hurricane brings up to 30 inches of precipitation and storm surges as high as 4m above ground. "Take cover without delay," locals have been urged.

The cyclone is the 13th storm in this year's Atlantic storm period, which normally finishes in November.

Most Intense Cyclone Threat

A category five hurricane is the most powerful category, with winds of at least 157 miles per hour.

Even though Melissa is projected to reduce in intensity to a Category 4 hurricane before reaching Jamaica, authorities said there was "minimal real distinction in the general consequences" upon landfall, and that the hurricane will be "equally strong" when it strikes the nation.

Inhabitants are being advised to secure their homes with protective bags and timber panels, and to accumulate necessary supplies.

Landslides currently triggered by the hurricane have caused two deaths in the country, according to the nation's Civil Protection agency.
