Qatar Short Race and Grand Prix Grid Setting: Real-Time Updates

Introduction

The author is arriving soon to guide you through today's short race (2pm GMT) and qualifying (6pm).

Real-Time Updates

Starting Lap Time

The starting lap has started.

Track Information

We have nineteen laps of the longest circuit in Formula 1, David Croft informs us.

Final Moments

The final countdown is on.

Driver Situation

One point in Max Verstappen's favour: his teammate Yuki Tsunoda is ahead of him by a single position. He is unlikely to challenge Red Bull's main man.

Interview Updates

Sky's internal discussion now: Gary Neville is with Mercedes.

Karun Chandhok is looking forward to the 2026 season, speaking with the engineer about his stepping up to the team team principal.

Grid Details

Just 16 cars on the grid. This followed another poor grid-setting session for the driver: following his result of twentieth and final in Las Vegas, leading to an eighth position in the grand prix, he did not manage to advance of the first qualifying segment once more on Friday. The team have consequently made changes to his setup and so he begins from the starting area.

The team's Lance Stroll and the Alpine pair of Pierre Gasly and Colapinto are all doing likewise.

Racer Statements

"We take the experience for the next day," states Hadjar, 11th on the grid. Expect a lot of that.

Team Standings

The focus isn't solely on the individual championship: McLaren have dominated the team championship but the team, with a 40-point lead over Red Bull, will be hoping to secure the runner-up position this weekend. Russell can assist in this goal from the front row, and Kimi Antonelli will start just behind Verstappen.

Previous Results

Piastri won that day – as he managed the previous season, too. The driver from McLaren is going for a hat-trick.

Short Race Importance

Right, just over 20 minutes remaining till the sprint race gets under way. Barring disaster, it's greatest value is as a preview of what is to come, instead of highly important in its itself, with only eight points available to the victor. However, second place in this race was enough for Verstappen to claim the title in a prior season.

Max Verstappen wins the championship after Pérez crashes out of the short race.
