Authorities in Tasmania are striving to determine a pink slime that has appeared on a secluded beach, with some scientists worried it could be an phytoplankton proliferation.

Broad Occurrence Across Beaches

The magenta-hued slime appeared along a section of Randalls Bay about 37 miles south of Hobart. A like substance has also been recorded on areas of Little Roaring Beach and a separate bay.

Algal blooms are natural events but their rate has increased in the past few years, partially due to environmental shifts and pollution that join together to create food-loaded oceans primed for the rapid spread of dinoflagellates.

Dinoflagellates are a phytoplankton species that normally function as the ocean's detritus consumers. During a bloom, there is a rapid growth in their populations that disrupts the normal functioning of aquatic systems.

These occurrences have been likened to marine infernos and can keep expanding as long as the environment is suitable. In severe cases, delicate ocean habitats can be wiped out as sea creatures is destroyed or smothered, supplying more nutrients for the outbreak.

A marine scientist, who took samples of the magenta ooze in the state, stated it looked like the potential proliferation had "expanded greatly" and suggested the fish farming business was the most likely culprit, citing like situations overseas.

"So we needs to issue a strong warning here, the authorities and the regulators need to act to this. We need to analyse the specimens we've taken and we need to inform the public here," she said.

The scientist expressed she had worries for community health after noticing a prickling feeling along her arms and face while being splashed with affected seawater.
